Discover Eaton
A City Rich in History
Eaton was founded in 1806 as the county seat of newly formed Preble County, named after General William Eaton, a hero of the First Barbary War. Its location made it a hub for regional trade and civic life. One of the city’s most notable landmarks is the Fort St. Clair State Memorial, preserving the site of an important 1791 fort from the Northwest Indian War. Eaton is also home to the historic Preble County Courthouse (1918), an elegant Beaux-Arts structure that still serves the community, and the Roberts Bridge (1829), Ohio’s oldest covered bridge and a National Historic Landmark. These sites showcase Eaton’s blend of pioneer resilience and preserved architectural heritage.
