A City Rich in History
Fairborn is unique in Ohio history as the only city created by the merger of two towns: Fairfield and Osborn. The merger was completed in 1950, but the community’s roots stretch back much further. Fairfield was established in the early 1800s, while Osborn relocated after the devastating 1913 Dayton Flood, when the Miami Conservancy District moved the entire town to higher ground. Fairborn’s modern identity has long been shaped by its ties to nearby Wright-Patterson Air Force Base and the aviation industry. Historic sites include the Fairborn Theatre (1948) and the Huffman Prairie Flying Field, where the Wright brothers perfected powered flight. Together, these landmarks reflect Fairborn’s pioneering spirit in both resilience and aviation history.
