A City Rich in History
Franklin was founded in 1796 by General William C. Schenck, who named it after Benjamin Franklin. Situated along the Great Miami River, Franklin became an important trading town in its early years. The arrival of the Miami-Erie Canal in the 1820s and 1830s further boosted its growth, making Franklin a key stop for commerce in southwest Ohio. Today, the Franklin Historic District, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, preserves many 19th-century buildings, including the Harding House and early brick storefronts along Main Street.
