A City Rich in History
Founded in 1791 as Fort Hamilton, the city became an important frontier outpost and later a manufacturing hub along the Great Miami River. Hamilton was officially incorporated in 1810 and named after Alexander Hamilton, the nation’s first Secretary of the Treasury. The city is rich in historic landmarks, including the Butler County Courthouse (1889), a stunning example of Second Empire architecture, and the Lane-Hooven House (1863), a rare Gothic Revival octagonal home. In recent decades, Hamilton has also earned the title “City of Sculpture,” with more than 40 public art installations throughout downtown. With its mix of industry, art, and history, Hamilton remains one of Ohio’s most distinctive communities.
