Oakwood’s roots date back to the early 1800s, but its real growth came in the late 19th and early 20th centuries as Dayton’s industrial leaders built homes there. The city was incorporated in 1908 and became known for its tree-lined streets, distinctive architecture, and strong schools. One of Oakwood’s most famous residents was aviation pioneer Orville Wright, who lived at Hawthorn Hill, a grand Georgian Revival mansion completed in 1914 that remains a National Historic Landmark. Oakwood also features the Oakwood Historic District, showcasing early 20th-century homes, and is home to the scenic Smith Gardens, often called a “hidden gem.” Together, these landmarks highlight Oakwood’s blend of history, innovation, and community pride.
