A City Rich in History
Vandalia was founded in the 1830s by settler Benjamin Wilhelm, who named it after Vandalia, Illinois, the town he originally planned to move to. Its location along the National Road (U.S. Route 40) quickly made it a vital stop for travelers and trade, fueling the young community’s growth. Later, the intersection of the National Road and the Dixie Highway gave Vandalia its lasting nickname: “The Crossroads of America.” Today, the city honors this transportation heritage while continuing to grow as a welcoming community in Montgomery County.
