West Carrollton traces its roots back to the early 1800s, when pioneers began settling along the fertile banks of the Great Miami River. Originally named Carrollton in honor of Charles Carroll of Carrollton, the last surviving signer of the Declaration of Independence, the town flourished as mills and farms took advantage of the river’s power and trade routes. By 1891, the name was officially changed to West Carrollton to distinguish it from another Ohio town with the same name. The arrival of the Miami-Erie Canal in the 19th century gave the community a major economic boost, connecting it to markets across the state. Today, West Carrollton remembers its canal-town origins while thriving as a welcoming suburban city.
