New Roof Installation in Dayton, Cincinnati & Southwest Ohio
A new roof is more than shingles—it’s a complete system designed to protect your home for decades. Good Guy Home Improvements installs every layer of a complete roofing system, ensuring it performs the way it was engineered to.
What Makes Up a Complete Roof System
A roofing system has multiple interdependent layers. Skipping or cutting corners on any one of them compromises the whole. Here’s what goes into a properly installed roof from bottom to top:
- Decking / sheathing: The structural foundation everything is fastened to
- Drip edge: Metal edge flashing that directs water off the fascia
- Ice and water barrier: Self-adhering membrane at eaves, valleys, and penetrations
- Underlayment: Synthetic moisture barrier covering the full deck surface
- Starter course: First row of shingles with enhanced adhesive sealing
- Shingles: The visible weathering surface
- Flashing: Metal seals at all transitions, penetrations, and edges
- Ridge cap: Final coverage at the roof peak
- Ridge vent: Exhaust ventilation at the peak to balance attic airflow
Decking and Underlayment
The decking is the structural surface the roofing system is fastened to. During every installation, we inspect each board of the existing decking—replacing any that show rot, delamination, or moisture damage before any new materials go down. Over the decking goes synthetic underlayment, which provides a secondary moisture barrier and performs far better than traditional felt paper in durability and water resistance.
Ice and Water Barrier
Ohio winters create conditions for ice dams—formations of ice at the eaves that force water back under shingles. The ice and water barrier is a self-adhering rubberized membrane installed at eaves, valleys, and around all penetrations. It seals around fasteners and creates a watertight layer even when shingles are breached by ice or severe weather. In Ohio’s climate, this is not optional coverage.
Flashing Installation
Flashing is the metal that seals every joint in the roofing system: chimney bases, wall transitions, pipe boots, valley intersections, and roof edges. Flashing failure is the leading cause of roof leaks, and it's most common when improperly installed. We use galvanized steel and aluminum flashing installed per manufacturer specifications and sealed appropriately at every termination point.
Ridge and Intake Ventilation
A properly ventilated attic requires balanced intake and exhaust: air enters through soffit vents at the eaves and exits through ridge vents at the peak. Without adequate airflow, attic temperatures spike, moisture accumulates, and shingle lifespan is dramatically reduced. On every installation, we evaluate existing ventilation and ensure the intake and exhaust balance is correct before the job is complete.
Shingle Installation
Shingles are installed in overlapping courses from the eave up, with each course offset to prevent aligned joints. Nailing pattern, nail placement, and depth are all specified by the manufacturer—and correct installation is required to maintain the warranty. We don't rush installation: proper alignment, correct overhang at the drip edge, and cap flashing at all penetrations are non-negotiable standards.
Final Inspection and Cleanup
After installation, we inspect the complete system: every shingle course, all flashing transitions, ridge coverage, and ventilation. We then perform thorough site cleanup—magnetic nail sweep of the lawn and driveway, gutter clearing of debris, and full removal of all materials and packaging. Before we leave, we walk through the finished roof with you and hand over warranty documentation.

Frequently Asked Questions
What's the difference between new installation and replacement?
New installation is typically on a new structure. Replacement involves removing the existing roof first. The installation process itself is essentially the same.
How do I choose the right shingle for my home?
We bring samples and walk through options based on your home’s style, budget, and performance requirements. No pressure—just information.
Do you pull permits for new roof installations?
Yes. We handle all required permits and schedule inspections as part of the standard project process.
Is ice and water barrier required in Ohio?
Building code requires it at eaves and valleys in most Ohio jurisdictions. We install it more broadly than code minimums for better overall protection.
